Te puna wai ora - Southern Critical Care is Dunedin Public Hospital’s new critical care unit. Located on the 5th floor of the hospital, they are transitioning into a new state-of-the-art 22-bed mixed ICU/HDU space.

They provide care to a wide range of patients of various ages, from young babies right through to the elderly. We are responsible for providing intensive care to a population of over 300,000 people living in Otago and Southland.

This catchment area is the largest in the country, so they have a close working relationship with the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust to provide a patient retrieval and transport service for the critically unwell.

The Southern Region

The Southern District is located on the southernmost part of Aotearoa, New Zealand's South Island. The main cities in the Southern District include Dunedin, Invercargill, Queenstown, and Wanaka.

Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora - Southern is a significant and varied employer in the Southern region of Aotearoa, New Zealand and collaborates closely with WellSouth Primary Health Network and all of our primary care partners. Our coverage extends to communities comprised of 350,000 individuals across an area twice the size of Belgium, and we serve a wide range of communities similar to the diversity of our workforce and job opportunities.

Te Puna Wai Ora - Southern Critical Care has the capability and resources to deliver long term life support to critically ill patients. It acts as a tertiary (specialised) referral service for other health care providers in Otago and Southland.

Dunedin Hospital is a University teaching hospital with very strong links to the University of Otago and the Otago Polytechnic Schools of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Sciences. Each year, Dunedin Hospital sees 36,000 emergency department presentations, performs approximately 10,200 theatre operations, 1800 births, and 23,000 discharges.

Getting around

  • Public transport in Otago and Southland is primarily provided by buses. Information can be found on local council websites: Otago and Invercargill. The Otago Regional Council runs bus routes and ferries in Queenstown

  • Taxis and rideshare services such as Ola and Uber are available in the main centres. There are also various rental vehicle companies in the District.
